| Introduction |
To ancient visitors from the north surmounting the sinuous Appenine ridge, the Garfagnana would have seemed an incredibly green basin surmounted by the splendid profile of the Apuan Alps. It was certainly not without apprehension that they would enter that "land of wolves and brigands", as described more than once by Ariosto. A valley enclosed between mountains, not on the main commercial routes, but traversed constantly by pilgrims, the Garfagnana has not suffered radical transformation during the passage of history, but has arrived at our time with the beauty of its mountains intact, where the wolf and the eagle have chosen to return, where its pure waters have forged in the marble one of the most important underground Karst complexes in the world, spectacular giant potholes and deep gorges. To complement the tranquillity offered by the villages and towns of the Garfagnana, its tasty local cuisine and the hospitality of its agri-tourism, APIANS wants to promote a tourism which offers exciting and fascinating out of the ordinary experiences , not usually possible to enjoy without adequate organisation, but which represent the true nature of this land.
