Along with the Karst phenomenon  ( a special type of landscape that is formed by the dissolution of soluble rocks, including limestone), water flowing to the valleys has created, in certain particular geo- morphological conditions, spectacular formations such as canyons, gorges and potholes which have unique characteristics.  We're talking in particular of the "Marmitte dei Gigante" and the "Orrido di Botri, two marvels which of their type have international relevance. The former, in particular,  constitute a geological phenomenon unique in Europe for their size and morphology.Attività Torrentismo

Rocks and pebbles of hard calcareous material, aided by water, have excavated cavities inside the softer calcareous rock which forms the watercourses - cavities which vary from a few centimetres to 11 metres in diameter.

The Marmitte dei Gigante involves  two fascinating itineraries which permit us explore two of these watercourses,  lowering ourselves down into amazing cavities by means of   simple but essential equipment.  The first itinerary takes us along the course of the Fosso del Fato Nero, the second negotiating  the deeper potholes of the Fosso dell'Anguillaia. For fitter participants both itineraries can be combined over two days to complete a marvellous loop which connects the two watercourses, going back up as far as their sources on the South face of Monte Sumbra.

The Orrido di Botri, on the Appenine side of the valley, is a splendid canyon excavated by water. In its depths you find a fascinating ecosystem, now protected by being designated a natural oasis.

Our route winds its way down the canyon, and descending into the dark depths between its extremely high enclosing walls is like entering another time.  Here everything is regulated by nature, by the water which courses all year round, creating waterfalls and natural pools of the purest water, enormous polished rocks, curious mosses and lichens which cover the cliff faces.

Given the scale of the canyon we need a whole day to descend it in safety, fully respecting  the habitat, and  the reasonable rules which the oasis enforces. A demanding day, but full of excitement and details to remember for a long time.

To comine the fascination of the canyon experience with pure enjoyment, here are two itineraries, great for a first experience, through  truly unique environments - La Forra del Ania and the Rio Selvano.  The water has in fact created a series of slides, pools

and meandering sections of great charm,  perfect for throwing oneself into the clearest water (not before putting on a wet suit). Two itineraries absolutely not to be missed if you want to experience the excitement of canyoning.
